'Our Family Hobby'

We began collecting Kenyan Sand Boas initially as a way to conquer our fear of snakes. Then we discovered that the whole family enjoyed the care and handling of Kenyans. It has exploded from there. We like this particular breed of snakes because we have a younger family. These East African Sand Boas are smaller, slower than the other breeds of snakes available, easy to care for and relatively new to the US pet trade with new morphs being introduced every year.

New Snakes!!!!
















These all will probably be held back but we got lucky being in the right place at the right time when our good friend Travis decided he was going to get rid of a couple of his holdbacks. The above picture is of a 2009 albino female, if you click on the picture you can see the saddle scales (cream colored ones) are tipped with orange. It is uncommon but not rare for an albino's scales to be tipped with orange. Travis' Kenyans tend to have an unusual colored saddle, you can really see it in the normal het albino in picture 3 and 4 below.
















The above picture is of a 2009 Normal female, I can't remember off hand if it is het for anything. She is about 100 grams and is well on her way to breeding, again, she is scheduled to be a future breeder for us.

This normal het albino is really cool looking. If you look at his saddles (the black part) you can see the orange color bleeding through. This is basically the same thing that is happening in the albino picture except is almost looks like the natural color of this snake is orange and the black is tipping the scales to create the saddles. Travis has produced the one and only 'Rose' possible morph which exhibits 'red' colored saddles on a normal colored Kenyan. If it turns out this trait is in fact a genetic reproducable trait than it willl open up a whole bunch more morphs. I don't know what he has going on with saddle color but it seems like every litter I get from him the saddles are a peculiar color. Tri Colored Hognose

Here is a picture of our new female Tri Colored Hognose.    She is a good eater and got a lot of spunk. The male is in shed so check back in a few days to see him. Check out the pattern on her head it looks venemous. We have had Western Hogs for a while but what struck us first off was when we check on her she rattles her tail. Very cool!

This picture was taken this afternoon. The below pictures were taken in May since that time I think he has doubled in size, he'll eat anything.
















To me, the Nuclear Meltdown is the holy grail of Kenyan Sand Boas. The Nuclear Meltdown is a cross between a Nuclear Kenyan Sand Boa and a Dodoma Kenyan Sand Boa. The Nuclear sand boa is a line bred trait creating super bright redish orange Kenyan Sand Boas developed by Roy Stockwell. The Dodoma sand boa has a very reduced pattern and maintains its color as it ages. When you combine these traits you have the Nuclear Meltdown, a reduced patterned, nuclear colored sand boa that will retain its incredible color through adulthood.

This girl above is an albino het for paradox. Both of her parents were paradox but we have been unable to find a black scale on her. Her saddles are lavender with orange on the tips. She is owned by my son, Braxon, who received her as a gift with a purchase of snow paradoxes from Steve Perry. He is very proud of her and simple refers to her as his 'het'.
















This is a nice example of a standard anery female from 2009. As is usual with this morph, she's easily handled and is a good eater.

Next Show: New Orleans October 9th and 10th

We had a great time early this year in New Orleans and will be back in just a couple weeks. We're hoping the Huey Long Scare You To Death Bridge is completed....but unfortunately I think it may be 2013....

We haven't made reservations for a hotel/motel/suites yet. If any of you have some ideas of a place near the show and close to stuff for the whole family to do...parks, games, food, general entertainment, we'd love to hear your ideas.

We have a bunch of great looking Kenyans, normals, anerys, albinos, snows, and stripes. We also have rough scales and javelin sand boas.

I have about 4.3 (four males and three females) Western Hognoses that are real cool looking. Some with the blond look and a couple greens with real high white.

My Kenyan Sand Boa is Not Eating

I've received a few emails this week from folks who purchased a sand boa this weekend at the NARBC Anaheim show concerned that their new sand boa is not eating.

This is perferctly normal.

Please read farther down on the blog about tank setup and make sure your temperatures are where they need to be and they have adequate areas to hide and relax.

It is a stressful experience for a snake to eat and couple that with a new environment at your home, it just takes them a week or two to relax and settle in.

I suggest you offer them food once a week. If they didn't eat this last weekend give them to next weekend. Because of the distance from Alabama to California and the rigors of last week, we started feeding all of these guys every 4-5 days, so they all have been eating really really well. It wouldn't surprise me if some didn't eat simply because they were not hungry.

We are back safley from our visit to California.  We visited our family in San Diego and also were able to work this show while the family took our children to Disneyland.

We wanted to share with you a few images from the show and thank you for coming by to meet us and let us share with you our sand boas.

Plain Old Everyday Normals.....

Saharan Sand Boa

Here is Braxton's (my 'snake handler') Saharan Sand Boa also known as a West African Sand Boa. This guy lives in his room and pretty much goes anywhere we'll allow Braxton to take him...and probably some places we are not aware of! While these look similiar to a Kenyan Sand Boa they don't get as thick and are a bit longer. The easiest way to tell them apart is the rounded hook tail on a Saharan Sand Boa. They are even more docile than a Kenyan but don't take to captivity as well.
