'Our Family Hobby'

We began collecting Kenyan Sand Boas initially as a way to conquer our fear of snakes. Then we discovered that the whole family enjoyed the care and handling of Kenyans. It has exploded from there. We like this particular breed of snakes because we have a younger family. These East African Sand Boas are smaller, slower than the other breeds of snakes available, easy to care for and relatively new to the US pet trade with new morphs being introduced every year.

Anery Birth Images

Here is one of our Female Anery's giving birth yesterday for her first time.  She had 1 Siberian Tiger, 5 Anery Stripes, and 5 Normal Stripes Het Anery.

We absolutley love the tight clean stripes and breed only the cleanest stripe males to our females. The anery stripes were by far my favorite morph when the first were introduced last year. The only problem was that in everyone's haste to produce all these new stripes they didn't stop and try and breed quality to quality. The resulting initial anery stripes were not well defined, and the black saddling tended to be more grey while the white also was a duller white. This resulted in them looking 'ok' but pretty hum-drum since they were greyish/cream contrast. When Jenn and I sat down and planned on breeding anery stripes last year we identified the above anery female as the perfect candidate for a breeder to finally produce an anery stripe that was not only would have a well defined tight stripe but would also have the deep black saddling and then the high white coloring that we pride ourselves on producing.

Well, we're happy to report that the 5 anery stripes are EXACTLY the way we had hoped! You can see on a few pictures that the stripes are nothing but spectacularly well defined and I am happy to report that even at birth their black saddling is midnight black, just like their mother's along with that great high white contrast. These five anery stripes may be the best specimens created to date of the anery stripe, at least, the best I've seen in person or in picture. We intend on keeping a pair and then sell the other three. Please contact Mark@LHALegal.com if you have an interest in purchasing not only an anery stripe but a top quality high contrast one too boot!

What is a flame Kenyan Sand Boa?

I see 'flame' Kenyan Sand Boa's advertised all the time. What is a flame Kenyan Sand Boa? Frankly, I don't know. The term flame was originally coined by VPI when the imported the first dodoma's and they referred to them as the dodoma flames...VPI is a marketing genius along with an eye for new mutations, couple new snake and well named mutation and you have a successful snake operation! So when I see people selling 'just' flames, I wonder what it is they are selling. Most of the time the snakes look like normals to me, which means your paying extra money for well....a 'normal' named a 'flame'. There is no agreed upon definition of a 'flame' and when I see adds for flames I always scrutinize the pictures hoping to find their 'flame' characteristics but have yet to find any correlation from one man's flame to another. I've emailed countless advertisers of the ellusive 'flame' and everyone seems to have their own idea. I think in some cases they are the equivalent to a high orange normal, in other cases maybe they have been crossed with the original dodoma flames (how you could tell or would know is another issue). Ultimately, I think it is just a name tagged to a nicer looking 'normal' so that it can be sold for twice as much money. Be sure before you buy the hype you find out the story behind the name, it just might not be worth it.

The State of the Union

August 4th, 2011.

The boys started back to school today which means we'll be able to get back on a regular schedule and stop neglecting the website. We have a lot of cool ideas for the website. One request we get every week is a morph page where you will be able to see picture examples of all of the Kenyan Sand Boa Morphs and patterns, be it genetic or linebred or unproven. We also are going to start back having the regular snake photo sessions and plan on finishing out our breeders and holdbacks page. We have received a lot of positive feedback from clients who were able to see the pictures of their snakes parents and we intend on expanding this area.

We have spent considerable amounts of time and money over the past year upgrading our facility with new Reptile Basics racks and other equipment to accomodate all of our collection. We also have reached out to many long time breeders and purchased some incredible Kenyan Sand Boas to help diversify our already great bloodlines and be able to meet demand on all of the morphs. The bulk of our purchases were of 2010 babies which are now really starting to fill out and take on a definite sub-adult look. We have started the process of photographing them and will shares those shots as they are taken.

Here's a picture of some wonderul examples of the Snow, Albino and Anery Kenyan Sand Boa Morphs

Last, Jenn and I want to thank all of you for your support over the last couple of years. Your support has given us the courage to take SandBoaMorphs.com from an incredible hobby to much more. Keep an eye out for SandBoaMorphs.com in next months Reptiles Magazine.

Thou Shall Not Covet....because the little girl is for sale!

Here's a picture of our 2007 Nuclear adult male and Daddy to the little Nuclear girl in the last picture

2007 Nuclear female and the mother to the beautiful little girl in the next picture

The nuclear morph is the rarest of morphs in the United States. It was developed by Roy Stockwell out of Canada and because these snakes are Cites protected they are a pain and very expensive to import into the US. I've never seen a finer breeding pair then the two we have pictured here. I have a couple other adult Nuclear pairs that are incredible but can't hold a candle to these two. A typical characteristic of Kenyan Sand Boas and especially Nuclears and Yellow Snow morphs is the color intensifies and changes over about a year. The female below will color up as nice as her parents and upon closer examination is more reduced than her mother. We do not anticipate selling any others from this litter and had not planned on selling any except the litter of 15 born in June was very female heavy. She is a fine example of the rare Nuclear morph and will be the center piece of your collection for years to come much like this pair is ours. Next year we anticipate selling more nuclear babies and the purchaser of this female will get the first crack at the first male nuclear we offer for sale. We are offering her for $450. Sixty day payment plans are available and the first person to pay pal us $50 at Mark@LHALegal.com will lock her up.
