'Our Family Hobby'

We began collecting Kenyan Sand Boas initially as a way to conquer our fear of snakes. Then we discovered that the whole family enjoyed the care and handling of Kenyans. It has exploded from there. We like this particular breed of snakes because we have a younger family. These East African Sand Boas are smaller, slower than the other breeds of snakes available, easy to care for and relatively new to the US pet trade with new morphs being introduced every year.

I don't know why but they actually all cooperated pretty darned well considering how many snakes there were....I'll try and name all the morphs from left to right...lol!!!

Vendors/Business Owners Meet our Graphic Designer!

I wanted to take a moment and publically thank Xavier Ocasio Santiago, our graphic designer who has designed countless magazine ads, logos, SBM wear along with bending over backwards to hit crazy last minute deadlines.

When Jenn and I decided to commit to SandBoaMorphs.com as more than a hobby we knew we needed to find a graphic designer that could help brand our product and was willing to work within our budget. We met Xavier online and he designed a few sample ads for us. We were working with a couple graphic designers at the time and found that most would design you a simple basic ad without listening to what we wanted. With Xavier, he not only produced us one ad, but then kept thinking up additional ideas and sent us like 10 different ads. They weren't all based off the same concept, he thought up all sorts of different ideas based on some parameters we laid out. He is super responsive to any request and isn't 'married' to his work so he takes no offense if you don't like this or that. He colaborates with us on our projects and takes our 'simple' (believe me, the final product you see was all his creativity) ideas and turns them into a real labor of love for the project. At some point in our relationship we stopped trying to be creative and now just give him a base parameter of what we want and ALWAYS are impressed with the end result.

If you are looking for professional work by a professional graphic designer (logos, business cards, signs, magazine ads, etc.) I'd recommend you start with Xavier. It costs you nothing to talk to him and I think you will be just as impressed as we have. You can see his work in Reptiles Magazine every month along with on our SandBoaMorphs.com wear. You can see some of his work on facebook http://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.445534327602.233028.744917602&type=3
or can contact him directly via email XavierOcasio@gmail.com

Be sure to tell him we sent you!

Thanks again Xavier!

HYPO Kenyan Sand Boas....2012

In 2012, we hope to prove out some snakes we've thought are hypomelanistic 'hypo' (reduced black pigment) with some 'proven' hypo lines we've acquired this past year from around.... We have about 15 suspected hypo adult female Kenyan Sand Boas ready to breed, whose saddles are very dull colored. We are working with five different hypo lines and are hoping that the mutation is the same within each line. We've seen some of the resulting Kenyans from these different hypo lines and are really excited about the potential new morphs we will be able to create. We believe we have an adult pair of hypo anerys better known as  'ghosts' that will finally be paired up this year. We have seen pictures of ghost anerys over the last two years and are excited to have the opportunity to produce them ourselves! We expect to see a hypo stripe this year and I'm sure one of these hypo line breeders will produce ghost stripes, hypo albino stripes and hypo snow stripes by 2013, possibly even paradoxes (surreal, the things aren't suppose to have the black dots in the first place and now we're going to reduce the pigment....crazy!).

'Pin' Stripe Project Unveiled

Introducing for the first time to the Kenyan Sand Boa community the 'PIN STRIPE PROJECT'!!!

Pin Stripe (1-2 Scales Wide)

Pin Stripe (1-2 Scales Wide)

We love the well defined stripes but if you've bred stripes before or have surfed the internet looking at pictures of stripes you know they come in all shapes and sizes. SandBoaMorphs.com categorizes them into four categories:
1) Junk Stripes: these are the stripes that kind of look like a stripe but are not well defined (sometimes referred to as Granites or Speckled Stripes)
2) Wide Stripes: these stripes are more defined and the stripe being 7-15 scales wide across the back.
3) Tight Stripes: these are cleaner stripes and are 3-6 scales wide across the back.
4) Pin Stripes: these stripes look like someone took a pen and drew a single line down the back and are 1-2 scales wide at the most across the back.

To produce a stripe initially you must breed a rufescen to another Kenyan Sand Boa. The stripes that are produced can range from Junk, Wide to Tight stripes. But the litter will tend to all fall into one category. We asked ourself why that was a few years ago? It seems the genetics within the rufescen determines what types of stripes it will produce. Breeding the same rufescens to multiple different Kenyans and getting the same type of stripes from said rufescen on multiple occassions has proven this theory to be true. After proving out this theory, it stood to reason that if we bred the best looking stripes we should continue to produce the best looking stripes....again, in 2011 our efforts were rewarded as we produced multiple high quality stripe litters.

What we now realize to be true is that your litter of stripes is only as good as the stripe you are breeding. Yes, sometimes a junk stripe may produce one or two tight stripes in the litter or a tight stripe may throw one or two junk stripes but generally, the majority of the stripes in the litter are going to look very similiar to the stripe you bred.

The stripe is genetically a co-dominant trait, meaning when you breed a stripe to a normal kenyan sand boa you statistically expect the litter to be 50% stripes and 50% tigers. The tigers are essentially 'normal' patterned kenyans but with a lot more of the black saddle pattern which dominates over the yellow/orange colored pattern.
Tiger Female Kenyan Sand Boa

Using this knowledge we took the opportunity to breed a nice tight stripe male normal het anery to a couple tiger females. The results were litters containing the new 'pin' stripes which only have 1-2 scales with color uniformally running from the head to the tail as if someone took a pen and drew a nice straight line along the back.

Nuclear War!

We have documented our Nuclear collection for a few years now on this blog. The Nuclear line of Kenyan Sand Boas originated by 25 years of Roy Stockwell out of Canada selectively breeding the best and cleanest colored reduced pattern Kenyan Sand Boas. After years of hard work he had developed the most exceptionally orange colored KSBs. Due to the high cost to export them from Canada to the United States it is very difficult and costly to purchase Nuclears. We obtained a young pair in 2010 and had our first litter in June 2011.

You see pictures of our incredible Nuclear Pair all over the websites, facebook and proudly displayed on our table at shows. Here's a picture of our female who is now ready to be bred....we're unsure what to breed to her at this point.
2007 Nuclear Female
When I first discovered nuclears I was always real cautious about purchasing a 'pure' nuclear because they didn't seem to have much color. I kept asking the few people who had them for sale 'Why isn't it more nuclear orange?' I was told each time that they color up as they age over their first year. I was skeptical, but not anymore.....
Here's the top two reduced patterned nuclears from the June litter

Here's a picture taken a month later of the most reduced patterned Nuclear Kenyan Sand Boa in her litter

Vivarium Thermostats Watcing over our Babies!

We have multiple racks with a hodge podge of thermostat manufactures used to control the temperatures. Inevitably, we would daisy chain multiple racks to one thermostat and if you've ever owned racks, you know heat tape can vary as much as 15 degrees from rack to rack. So, you are always messing with the temperatures to try and get a 'suitable' temperature for all the racks on that one thermostat.

Coldblooded Novelties (on facebook) has outfitted our entire facility from rack, to bowl, to tub to thermostat. After the pro exotics fire we became concerned with some of our thermostats, along with our desire to control temperatures better from rack to rack, led us to speak with Frank (Coldblooded Novelties) about outfitting each rack with its own Vivarium Thermostats. We already had a couple of the Vivariums and loved them so the choice was really not difficult. Above is a video of the facility with all the our Vivariums neatly stacked upon each other and watching over the health of our snakes like little eyes. Wishing everyone a Merry Christmas!
